Shared Table Project: Equipping Urban Congregations to Set Intentional Tables of Belonging

2026: Shared Table Project equips urban congregations with a specific focus on bi-vocational, immigrant, and African-American congregations to reclaim the table as their ministry, beginning in Breadcoin’s home cities of Washington, DC and Baltimore and expanding to Harrisburg, Tampa, and beyond. Many of the churches best positioned for hospitality are least able to practice it the traditional way: they worship in storefronts and rented halls, their members live in apartments, and their pastors are stretched across a second job. Yet their neighborhoods are full of locally owned restaurants and food hall vendors often owned by their own neighbors.

This project turns that constraint into a strategy. Rather than asking churches to gather people in homes they do not have, we equip them to host recurring, lay-led “intentional tables” at local Breadcoin vendors: gatherings of generous welcome, safe space, and ongoing learning, shaped around the specific people a congregation is called to love including youth aging out of foster care, single mothers, isolated elders, the young athletes a coach mentors. The Breadcoin network lets a congregation convert ordinary hospitality into local investment: dollars circulate to neighborhood entrepreneurs, relationships deepen with guests and vendors alike, and lay leaders host with dignity and choice rather than charity. Over two years, in partnership with the Ministry in the City HUB, Breadcoin will train a cohort of congregations, seed tables across our cities, publish a transferable toolkit, and share the approach through seminaries and CCDA gatherings.
