Semillas Coffee and Community
2026: Semillas Coffee and Community is envisioned as a nonprofit coffee shop with a dual purpose: to address the scarcity of community spaces and resources in South Central Los Angeles while fostering educational and economic opportunities. Recognizing the limited access to welcoming environments for social interaction and focused study, Semillas aims to establish a vibrant hub offering a full coffee bar alongside essential support services. A key element of Semillas’ mission is to provide accessible tutoring services on weekdays. This initiative will operate on a reciprocal model, encouraging community members to volunteer as tutors in exchange for study space or other benefits, thereby creating a self-sustaining ecosystem of learning and mutual support. In addition, Semillas will offer monthly development classes designed to equip and empower local leaders within the church and broader community. These sessions will focus on practical skills such as leadership development, financial literacy, college and career readiness, and community organizing. By providing accessible resources, mentorship, and hands-on learning opportunities, these classes will help church members and students become confident leaders and active contributors to their communities.
Dina Martinez (She/Her/Ella) is an accomplished leader with over 10 years of experience in nonprofit management, community organizing, leadership development, and strategic planning. She has a proven track record of developing impactful programs, building strong partnerships, and driving organizational growth while advancing educational and community-centered initiatives.
Raised in an inner-city neighborhood of Los Angeles by parents who emigrated from El Salvador, Dina developed a strong sense of resilience, resourcefulness, and commitment to service. Growing up at the intersection of diverse cultures, ethnicities, socioeconomic backgrounds, and generations has shaped her ability to connect with and support diverse communities.
For 13 years, Dina served as a National Director for a nonprofit organization focused on leadership development, empowering college students to strengthen their leadership skills and create positive change in their communities. Throughout her career, she has led teams, managed complex initiatives, and developed programs that expand opportunities for underserved populations.
Outside of her professional work, Dina enjoys running, hiking, practicing yoga, and spending time with her family. She is passionate about empowering others and creating meaningful community impact through collaborative leadership and service.
Congregations and Communities grants provide support for urban pastors, churches, faith-based community organizations, and theological institutions to share resources, ideas, and practices for life-giving ministry in cities across North America. We are truly inspired by the commitment of these churches, educational institutions, and community organizations.
But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare. This has been the verse that birth forth this vision for me and I am praying for welfare and flourishing.
